Chapter 16

Every day was filled with joy as the two Ancient dragons and the two baby dragons leaped into the sky together, traveling further, higher, and faster, each and every hour. And Raine rode astride her love, thinking that no Scinterian in all of history could have felt greater happiness. Although once enemies, Scinterians and dragons were two halves of a single whole, and to be bound to an Ancient, then have children by her, was an indescribable gift.

The children were a wonder, larger each day, the rest of their bodies beginning to catch up to their overly large heads and stocky bodies. Still tiny compared to the two Ancients, they were at least more proportional, and their flight improved as a result.

Raine’s lessons had achieved a profound result, and Kylan determined that, whenever she got around to re-contacting the rest of their kind, she would recommend the method. The two little ones jetted about, somersaulting in the air, barrel-rolling over their mother, and engaging in playful acrobatics that were jaw-dropping. Kaia had already perfected a tight corkscrew that allowed her to rapidly descend in place, and Laina had developed the ability to stop so quickly that anyone behind her would hurtle past before they could react. Watching the two play, dive-bombing each other in terrifying maneuvers that elicited little more than laughter from their parents, was extraordinary. Kylan felt like she was seeing the birth of something entirely new for their Kind.

“Do you see that elk down there?” Talan murmured.

“I do,” Raine said. “Do you think it’s time for some practical exercises?”

“Yes,” the dragon rumbled.

“Kaia! Laina!”

The baby dragons wheeled about and came close to Raine, paralleling her movement on the back of Talan, their small wings flapping away.

“Do you see that elk down there?” Raine called out to them.

The two little heads dipped as Talan made a wide circle about the area. They turned bright eyes back to their mother.

“I want you to take it down.”

The two little ones felt a thrill of excitement as Talan continued her wide, leisurely circle about the area. She was high enough not to disturb the elk and maintained a position to where her shadow would not cross over the beast, considerations to which she was certain her offspring were oblivious. The two briefly came together, then with no planning at all, dove down toward the animal.

It was a testament to their raw talent that they nearly got the elk, despite their many mistakes. But their shadows spooked the animal, and as he leaped sideways, then sprinted into the undergrowth, Laina barely managed to avoid a tree trunk and Kaia crash-landed into a pile of dirty snow. Kylan’s chuckle drifted over on the wind to Raine and Talan.

“So close and yet so far,” Raine said under her breath.

The children regrouped and flapped upward to their parents, catching an updraft which eased their ascent.

“And what did we learn?” Raine prompted when the little ones were gliding next to her once more.

Neither had yet mastered human speech, or even spoken a word, but they were both expressive.
